Description

A III. - Collins Industries Case. A III.1. - Introduction to Collins Industries. Collins Industries, headquartered in Hutchinson, Kansas, is the leading ambulances manufacturer in the world. The company of 150 million dollars is an international competitor that sales more than the 20% of its vehicles on the market outside the United States of America. Its greatest ambulances subsidiary (known as Wheeled Coach), located in Winter Park, Florida, manufactures the vehicle on assembly lines (that is, through an iterative process). The factory in Florida assembles 12 main ambulance designs, which use 18,000 different inventory items: 6,000 for manufactured parts and 12,000 for purchased parts. This variety of products and the nature of the process require a good material requirements planning (MRP). The efficient use of an MRP system requires accurate lists of materials and precise inventory records. Collins system, which uses MAPICS DB software with an IBM AS400 PC, provides daily updating that has achieved the inventory reduction in a 30% in only two years. Collins remarks the necessity of correctly fulfilling four key tasks. First, the materials planning must satisfy both the framework program requirements and those of the operations facilities capacity. Second, planning must be carried out exactly as it was designed. Third, the inventory investment gets reduced through efficient materials delivery and, in its moment, the inventory control and a constant review of purchase methods. Finally, Collins maintains an excellent record status. Records accuracy is acknowledged as an essential factor for its MRP program success. Cyclic counts imply material audits that not only correct mistakes but also investigate and correct any issues. Collins Industries uses the material requirements planning (MRP) as a catalyst to keep a reduced inventory, great quality, adjusted programs, and accurate records. Collins has achieved a competitive advantage through the MRP. A III.2. - Wheeled Coach Branch “The company Wheeled Coach in Winter Park (Florida) controls from the smaller piece to the biggest one of the chassis. The leasing ambulances manufacturer in the world can manufacture an unlimited amount of personalized settings for ambulances in only 19 days.

Since one only vehicle needs an average of 3,000 different types of raw materials from the inventory, how do they know which raw materials are needed? And in which proportion? The answer: a material requirements planning. The material requirements planning or MRP helps the directors to control the inventory requirements due to the raw material demand direct dependence on the finished items to be manufactured. Once the type of vehicle I set, the MRP system will require the components needed to such design. Wheeled Coach installed its MRP system on 1994, and the cost was of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The software used by them, known as MAPICS, works on an IBM AS-400 computer. Bob Collins, president of Wheeled Coach, contributed directly to the installation of said system: ‘The MRP is critical for Wheeled Coach to take control over our entire inventory.' Let’s take a look at the MRP process for one of the Wheeled Coach products, the Moduvan: ‘The first part of the process begins when we provide the pieces budget to the customer. As we manufacture personalized products, obviously, when we provide the budget to the customer, it is necessary to create a list of material if we want to be strict about the costs. For example, in Moduvan case the prefabrication module is the one that leads the MRP system. Each vehicle present in our scheduling contains a specific list of material for this product’. Once the customer has specified the characteristics to be integrated by the Moduvan, the MRP system will send to the managers a report to help them in orders carry out, using only the appropriate inventory items. The Wheeled Coach master program leads the system; it is a detailed plan that shows the manufacturing tasks for the next two weeks. The material requirements’ planning is the most appropriate way to schedule manufacturing and purchase the demand is independent. Do you imagine the confusion that would be caused in the assembly process of Wheeled Coach without this planning? That would be an authentic emergency.” Source: Barry Render, María Isabel Pérez de Lara Choy, Marcia Aída, 2004...
