Description

Cody Layton Rescued Children, Lost once More I.

Introduction: A. Remember yourself as a child for a moment; think back to your family, friend’s maybe even a favorite show. Now forget that, you’re a twelve year old girl, stolen from her family. Forced into prostitution for the past two years. Time and time again you’ve tried to escape, but your cries for help have never been heard. And the strange men that force you to perform these sexual acts only beat you into submission when you attempt to free yourself from this life. You hear sirens in the distance, but these sirens are different. They get louder as they approach the building where you’ve been trapped for the last 3 nights. Three police bust through the door, and they see you. Bruised and tied up to a chair, they set you free. What seems to be an end to a nightmare, a chance to for a new life, is only a start of more hardship. B. I come here today with a broken heart for these children, and the hope that I can inform you of the issues these children face after their rescue. And through my research and deep passion for these children. C. Move you to become involved in my proposed solution.

Transition: Portland finally aware of its role in the child sex industry is doing a lot to stop it. II.

Need/Problem A. Main Point #1: And through these actions, many girls have been rescued.

i.

Mike Geiger of the Portland police department reports in the Article Portland’s dark world of sex crime. That he has lead four total rescue operations, saving a total of 76 girls in the last year.

ii.

This is an increase of 56 children. From 2011 only having twenty recorded children rescued during that year, and an increase of 73 children from 2010 with only 3 children being rescued that year. According to a journal written by Thomas J. Holt, titled Examining sex work from the client’s perspective.

B. Main Point #2: Though the number of children being rescued is increasing greatly, unfortunately so is the number of children getting into the trade. i.

In the journal, “Prostitution as a form of work” written by Ronald Weitzer he discusses how as a nation, the U.S has seen an incredible increase in the child sex industry. And Portland has an astonishing increase; a projected 500 children are currently forced to work in the trade currently. And this number rings so true to Portland police officers, having an average of 3-5 child sex victims per week.

ii.

Mike Geiger of the Portland police department explains in the New York Times article “Portland’s Dark world of Child Sex Trafficking” that he is prepared for this increase in child prostitution. Claiming that with current leads, the December rescue operation has potential to rescue over 40 children. (All Slides)

iii.

Ironically the rescue of these children leads to a whole new issue. And the city of Portland is faced with a complete new problem. It may seem like

there is no harm in these children being rescued, and a good thing it is. But now these children are left with nothing. In many cases they were taken from their homes, disconnected from their families. These children shortly after being rescued from their worst nightmare simply can’t catch a break. Portland is able to house many of these children for a short time, but certainly not the amount that they are rescuing. Leaving many of these children again without a home, no money. And in many cases left to resort back to their old lives. Internal Summary: In short Portland is very active in rescuing these children forced into the sex industry. But In many cases once these children are rescued. They have nowhere to go. What seems to be freedom from a terrible past, only leads to more pain. Transition: The future for these children doesn’t have to stay dark; there is a way out for them. Internal Preview: The solution to this issue is actually right here in Portland. III.

Solution A. Main Point #1: Oregonians against Trafficking Humans, otherwise known as OATH, is one of Oregon’s only nonprofits dedicated to providing help to sex trafficking victims. Their Goal is to help all victims who have been forced into the sex trade, but give more effort to held underage victims. i.

The most important thing that OATH offers is its housing for any age victims. But as we stated earlier, Oregon and especially Portland is seeing the number of rescued victims growing tremendously. OATH located here in Portland Is simply out of room.

ii.

But as a member of OATH you can open your home to a child in need, allowing them into your family, which may be something new for this victim.

iii.

The last thing that OATH offers is its victim mentor program. Where full time volunteers become family to these victims. Spending many hours a week with them, becoming maybe the first positive influence they have ever had.

IV.

Visualization. A. Main Point #1: Remember back to the beginning of this speech. Visualize again that you are the 12 year old girl, again beaten into submission until you perform horrible tasks. Unfortunately for one, this is a real story. i. During my phone interview with OATH I spoke with Keith Bickford. I asked for him to tell me a story, a story that sums up the normal life for these girls prior to finding OATH. This was the story he told me, though her name had been forgotten, her story would remain with him forever. ii. Visualize again that you are this girl, finally rescued. But with nowhere to go. The only option is the streets, where you might find yourself once again under control of the sex industry.

V.

Action:

A. Oregon is doing an incredible thing by rescuing these girls, freeing them from a terrible past. Organizations like OATH are overwhelmed by the amount of victims seeking refuge. And they have to turn down many victims. B. This is where we need to step in, it is our job as a community to help this victims. OATH needs places for these victims to stay. If you are fortunate enough to have your own house, maybe you are able to house a child. Become the first real mother, father of just friend that they have had in years. If you have a home, consider opening it to someone who really needs it. i. I know as college students, many of us do not have the ability to open our homes. But this doesn’t mean you can’t help. OATH needs these full time volunteers mentioned earlier. To act as friends and mentors, attempting to guide and encourage these children to seek a better life. And helping them along the way. C. Don’t let a rescue, something that should be seen as a fresh start or a way out. Become just another burden these victims have to deal with. Open your home, or just your heart through being a volunteer. And let these victims enjoy the fresh start they deserve.

Proof of Interview (Thank you Email): Dear Keith Bickford, I want to thank you very much for your time during our phone interview. It was an incredible help for my speech, as well as a very inspiring conversation. My heart goes out to the victims you help every day. I can honestly say you have inspired me, no longer can I sit, knowing of the horror these girls go through. You can definitely look for me to be involved with OATH in the future. I wish for the best in your leadership, and hope to see your great work continue. Thanks very much, Cody Layton....
