Stephanie Safdie Professor Schwartz COMM 107 (1601) MWF 9 AM April 28th, 2017 (word count: 439) Persuasive Speech Reflection My whole life, dating all the way back to grade school, I can always remember giving speeches or presentations in class as being my strong suit. I was always very good at giving eye contact, projecting volume well, and speaking with vocal variation. Coming into this class, I was prepared to succeed and expected to do well, and I believe I have. However, there is always room for improvement, and there are things I have learned from giving presentations in this class to take with me in the future. Throughout the informative, group, and persuasive presentations: I believe my strengths of volume, eye contact, energy, vocal variety, and body language were well depicted. Something that I knew to work on in between my informative speech and my persuasive speech was my transitions. For instance, in my informative briefing, when I talked about the hook to lyrics, I could have explained a bit more or transition into the process of going from a hook and start writing lyrics. This goes for the same in my orienting material in my informative speech – I could have flowed more easily from my personal experience songwriting to how hooks come about, perhaps, from explaining when I came up with a really good hook or melody and my inspiration to write a song was sparked, and then continue to explain the next step of songwriting from there.

I believe I tremendously improved on this weakness in my persuasive speech on veganism. I crafted good orientating material from my personal ties to explaining how experimenting with veganism helped my own personal health before transitioning into talking about the health benefits of going vegan. Also, in my persuasive speech, I used a quote from a doctor studying veganism on how our environmental contexts directly impact our food choices. I did this to transition smoothly from talking about the effects of veganism on the environment to how our society has conditioned us to believe that eating animals is a normal. I could have also cited the places where the doctors I researched have studied so my audience can find them to be more credible. In the future, when researching and citing sources, I will be sure to always look up where the authors have conducted their research, and to make this clear to my audience. Overall, I am proud with the presentations I have given throughout the semester. I am honestly very grateful to have been given the opportunity to do public speaking again, and look forward to taking my strengths, newly learned weaknesses, and new techniques learned on communications and presentations with me in my future endeavors....
